Even though the achievements are straight-forward and grinding your stats and certain cumulative achievements can be boring, the game has so much more to offer that it offsets those tedioms. I quite enjoyed The Escapists (I've played the X1 and 360 version back-to-back). There's not too much to say about the achievements as there's nothing cryptic or too unique here. Crafting every item will most likely require a checklist so you can keep track of your progress (luckily the solution and walkthrough have a handy one to use). It is not too difficult to complete the game, but it can be a little tedious if you play a certain way (for example, I didn't beat inmates up too often during normal play, so I had to grind that out). Completing favours, beating up inmates and guards, and crafting every item in the game are some examples. The achievements in this game are very straight-forward and mainly cumulative. I could go on longer about the detailed aspects that The Escapists has to offer, but in order not to take away much more time, I'll end by saying it's an enjoyable experience with the ability to choose your style of gameplay and make the game as hard or easy as you want it to be.

While I understand why they're there, they were my least favorite part of the game, mostly because exercising consists or rapidly alternating between LT and RT, which gets old really fast. They are mostly beneficial and sometimes necessary to escape the prison. You have speed, strength, and intelligence stats that can be raised. One final element to mention are your stats. Guards will make sure you stay in line, so if you're caught looting an inmate's desk or not being where you should be, they may eventually go after you if their "heat" gets raised too high. If they hate you, they may decide to beat you up periodically. If they love you, you can recruit them to do some dirty work for you. Inmates can either love you or hate you depending on how you treat them. Another form of income is by completing favours from inmates like beating someone up for them, retrieving an item for them, or distracting guards during roll call or meals. Jobs provide income that let you buy items from other inmates. There is a daily routine that you can choose to follow that include roll calls (which are almost mandatory), meals, jobs, and exercise periods. A surprisingly deep crafting system allows for a plethora of tools and weapons you can use as well as objects that can help you hide contraband, up your defenses, or get fellow inmates to align with you. The game caters to your favored style of gameplay, which is a huge plus. You can take your time to plot an elaborate escape or you can beef up and punch your way to freedom. Its pixelated graphics are quiet charming and while repeated characters can be a bit confusing, it overall adds to the game as a benefit. The game has a routine embedded into it, but it gives you the choice to follow or do whatever you want to. Each prison gets more difficult with varying degrees of obstacles to prevent your escape like security cameras or contraband detectors. There are rough guards and fellow inmates who will keep you on your toes. The game offers a variety of tools, weapons, and items that will help you along your quest.

There is no one way out you can choose how to escape whether it be by digging, fighting, or sneaking to freedom. Your goal is to simply escape from prison. The Escapists is a strategic management simulation game. Does The Escapists provide a good escape from real world stresses?
